CLEVELAND -- The Indians had little choice but to give up Justin Masterson. The trade doesnt mean theyre going to surrender the season. "We will never raise the white flag," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. "Thats not an option. Anybody who stands next to me in the dugout knows that will never happen." Protecting themselves in case the 29-year-old Masterson left as a free agent after the season, the Indians traded the right-hander on Wednesday to the St. Louis Cardinals. The trade of Masterson could be followed by other moves by the Indians, who entered Wednesday 6 1-2 games behind first-place Detroit in the AL Central and in a scramble with five other teams for the leagues second wild-card spot. The Indians could also trade shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera before the deadline. Like Masterson, Cabrera is in the final year of his contract and the Indians have shown little interest in re-signing him. Dealing the two-time All-Star could bring a prospect in return. General manager Chris Antonetti said hes exploring deals to improve the team before Thursdays 4 p.m. trade deadline. "Our focus is to continue to try to win as many games as we can," he said. "Were currently in the midst of having conversations to bring players in to impact our team at the major league level. Whether or not that happens over the next 24 hours, there are a lot of factors in play and its hard to handicap that." Masterson began the season as the Indians ace. Hell end it with a different team in a different league after a disappointing four months. "I was surprised," Masterson said. "Its bittersweet. Im sad to leave the fellas and the fight were making here in Cleveland, but Im excited to get to St. Louis and be a part of what they have going there." In exchange for Masterson, who was scheduled to come off the disabled list later this week, the Indians got outfielder James Ramsey. A first-round pick by the Cardinals (No. 23 overall) in 2012, Ramsey has spent this season at Double-A Springfield, where he batted .300 with 13 home runs and 36 RBIs. Antonetti said Ramsey will be moved up to Triple-A Columbus. Masterson went 14-10 last season and then turned down an offer of a contract extension in spring training. "Its an extraordinarily difficult day for us," Antonetti said. "It wasnt an easy decision, but its one that made sense." Masterson is 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA in 19 starts this season and has had a noticeable loss in velocity. In five starts before being placed on the DL with right knee inflammation, he allowed 19 runs and 27 hits in 18 innings. Masterson, who hasnt won since June 8, said the impending free agency didnt affect his performance. "I guess I could try and blame that, but that would be a lie," he said. The Cardinals are in the race for the NL Central crown, a season after going to the World Series. "Im excited," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said before the Cardinals played the Padres in San Diego. "Ive watched this guy. Yes, the numbers dont quite look the same as what they looked last year, but were talking a year ago. Still, good movement, hes able to attack the strike zone. We can see theres a lot of potential here to help us out." Masterson will join the Cardinals on Friday in St. Louis and is scheduled to start against the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. "Lets go. Theres no sense waiting around," Matheny said. Masterson was acquired by the Indians at the trading deadline in 2009 in the deal that sent catcher Victor Martinez to Boston. Before Tuesdays series opener against Seattle, Masterson said he wouldnt be surprised if the Indians made any moves before the trade deadline Thursday. Masterson had said he was hoping to stay and help them make a playoff push. Francona was Bostons manager when Masterson was dealt to Cleveland. Masterson went 48-61 with Cleveland. "The hug was a little longer than normal," Francona said. "We may part teams, but my admiration for him isnt parting." Joked Masterson: "Tito keeps trading me away. Whats up with that?" LOUIS -- Russell Martin wanted a better fate for his starting pitcher and helped deliver a happier ending.MONTREAL -- Taking two weeks off after a devastating loss will be unbearable for Impact defender Heath Pearce. Montreal blew a lead and conceded four first-half goals in a 4-2 defeat to D.C. United on Wednesday at Saputo Stadium. "Its torture," said Pearce, whose team wont play again until the end of the month due to Major League Soccers World Cup break. "Its torture to go two weeks without a game. The good thing about this sport is usually you play every week and you get a chance to correct things. "Weve seen what it takes for us to be good, the tools that we have and what happens when we dont implement them." Pearce and the Impact backline were sloppy on Wednesday, giving D.C.s forwards and midfielders too much space and time with the ball in the final third. On the opener in the sixth minute of play, striker Fabian Espindola tricked Pearce and centre back Wandrille Lefevre with a no-look pass to Luis Silva, who put away his first of the season en route to a first-half hat trick. Espindola caught the Impact ball watching again in the 23rd minute as he sent a seemingly harmless low cross into the box. The pass evaded three Montreal defenders and fell right to Nick DeLeon, who tied the game 2-2 with an easy tap-in. Silva gave the visiting team the 3-2 lead with a breathtaking strike from about 30 yards out in the 39th minute. Unchallenged, and with Montreals back four dropping off, D.C.s attacking midfielder curled a shot just past a diving Troy Perkins fingertips. The 25-year-old, who had gone nine games without a goal prior to Wednesday, completed his hat trick from the penalty spot after Steve Birnbaum being brought down Hassoun Camara. "What do you want me to do?" asked Impact manager Frank Klopas. "Jump on the field and play for them? Im a very competitive person, and this is not the team I want. I want a team thats going to go on the field and compete. I want a group of players that will go out there and leave everything on the field." Klopas said he likely wouldnt shuffle his backline during the break given the string of good performances over the last few weeks. Fresh off its Amway Canadian Championship victory, Montreal came into the match unbeaten att home in its last three games in all competitions and riding consecutive clean sheets.dddddddddddd. Klopas men hadnt conceded at Saputo Stadium in 206 minutes. The stretch of positive results after a devastating start to the season made the loss to D.C. United tougher to swallow. "We would be foolish to think that we werent going to have more setbacks along the way," said Pearce. "You dont correct a system overnight. But that result was unacceptable for us. In any league, on any team, you have to have enough guys on any single day having good games. Today we didnt have enough, if any." D.C.s win, the teams seventh in its last 11 games, propelled United (7-4-4) to the top of Eastern Conference standings. At the other end of the table, the Impact (2-7-4) are dead last with only 10 points from 13 games. Jack McInerney and Andres Romero gave their team a chance to take points from Wednesdays encounter, scoring back-to-back goals to give the Impact a 2-1 lead. McInerney found the back of the net in the 12th with a tight-angle shot that grazed the post to goalie Andrew Dykstras left before Romero gave the Impact a short-lived lead in the 21st with a great individual effort. Down 4-2, Impact captain Patrice Bernier had a golden opportunity to ignite a comeback in the 76th minute, but his penalty shot hit the post, went off Dykstras back and trickled out of play. The shot came after Davy Arnaud was called for a hand ball. Pearce tried making the most out of the loss. "As bad as it is, it gives us a chance to really reflect, and each guy to go home and take a look in the mirror individually and think about what we can do better and how we can help the team more, all of us, from A to Z," he said. Notes: This was only the second time Montreal conceded four goals at home in the MLS era. a Justin Mapp missed the game with a groin injury. a Three Montreal supporters were expelled from Saputo Stadium during the second half for igniting flares in the stands. The same three individuals were reprimanded last week for a similar incident. a The Impact signed Spanish midfielder Gorka Larrea prior to the game on Wednesday. Larrea has played for La Ligas Levante and Real Sociedad.
